GIRL IN RED - "RUE" (POP, NORWAY)

Marie Ulven is better known under the moniker of Girl In Red, a singer/songwriter/producer from Norway who has amassed millions of streams and performed at notable festivals such as Brighton's very own Great Escape. The artist is often labelled as being a maestro when it comes to chiselling out melancholic bedroom-pop festooned with stark subject matter. The fact she is finally being championed more frequently in the UK courtesy of Radio 1 merely highlights the ascending star of this gifted Norwegian on a global scale.

On the face of it, latest single "Rue" is a darkened amusement into the realms of mental health. Purgative angst and fraught mental kineticism is something so hard to convey and yet Girl In Red manages to do this with a dexterous hand; honest to feel relatable, reserved enough to not be too brazen, hopeful to not be too morose. The instrumental compositions mirror the song's message with muted poise, lustrally swaying between Ulven's haunting vocals as vortexed riffs and imposing drum beats build into a crescendo of stampeding indie noir-pop. And yet, lyrically, "Rue" is also a homage to those supportive figures around Ulven. "I wrote this song for my loved ones who are affected by my mental health. I will always try my best to get better for them, and I am forever grateful for their presence in my life". This is also, crucially, a song simply saying 'thank you' to those Ulven values most. That transparency is both refreshing and humbling.
