GRACEY FT ALEXANDER 23 - "LIKE THAT" (POP, UK)
Gracey is another Brighton based starlet in the same guise as Sianon, and Salt Ashes with solid pop credentials akin to Charli XCX or Dua Lipa: a plethora of songwriting acknowledgements (RAYE, Jonas Blue), a TikTok viral hit, a top 10 with 220 Kid and endorsements from Radio 1. The solo artist certainly has a knack when it comes to masterful pop production. Despite lockdown and delaying her debut album, the plucky singer has dropped her feistiest ensemble to date.
"Like That", with guest vocals by emerging Chicago artist Alexander 23, details the relatable yet bittersweet difficulty of trying to move on from something. Gracey's penmanship trickles through every word with Alexander 23's lyrics mirroring her own, "Oh I've been such a mess, my heart it needs a rest, 'cause I'm one break away from being broken", showcasing the shared emotional anguish. Skillfully transversing between candied vigour and mechanised efficiency amid a backdrop of determined beats and glowy electronica, Gracey dictates the tempo with aplomb. The offsetting of each choral build-up subverts typical conventions giving us a staccatoed, almost deconstructed angle whereby vocals, lyrics and instrumentation calm themselves. "Like That" belies the darkened undertones of its message with a colourful aestheticism detailing a type of pop that reflects reality with honesty and openness.
