BLACK HONEY - "RUN FOR COVER" (ROCK, UK)
We first mentioned Brighton based outfit Black Honey several years ago courtesy of their heavy involvement and influence in the local scene. Their brand of raucous indie-rock bombardment meets frittered surf reverb is something well honed and unique to the band and since then the four piece of Izzy, Chris, Tommy and Alex have gone on to do a great many things, namely, performing at Glastonbury, touring with Royal Blood and a top 40 album.
Despite lockdown restrictions the band have teased fans with new material; "Run For Cover" is a smouldering sexual beast of an anthem detailing the trivialities of sex co-written by Mike Kerr from Royal Blood that as Izzy states "It's fun but on a bit of a knife edge of risk and weird. Sex can be clumsy, emotional and complex - I love this song. I hope it makes women find themselves and dump their boyfriends". Those founding sentiments resonate through the track unabashed. Feeling like No Doubt in a coke induced vortex, sweltered guitar riffs collide against the soundboard with frenetic movement amidst Izzy's tunnelled vocal seduction; boisterous in places, retrospective in others, the maniacal shift in tempo for each choral build-up coupled with viscous reverb and formidable drum beats perfectly mirrors the lyrical basis to "Run For Cover". Black Honey have gifted us another dynamic slab of gritty indie meets gnarled Brit-rock that leaves us wanting more.
