ROYAL BLOOD - "TROUBLE'S COMING" (ROCK, UK)
Worthing/Brighton based Royal Blood have always been a firm favourite of ours after being involved with their interview for BOON Magazine towards the beginning of their musical endeavours and having met the guys post-gig in Fort Lauderdale some years later. The duo consisting of Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher have since gone on to notch up a plethora of awards, produced two highly regarded albums to date and amassed a loyal fanbase.
Their latest single "Trouble's Coming" marks a distinct shift in musicality whilst retaining many of the fervent nuances and grandiose rock compositions that many have become accustomed to and grown to love. "We made this wholeheartedly for ourselves, and allowed everything we love about music to reveal itself" the two state. That sentiment is perfectly encapsulated from the offset as a fiendishly hubristic bass line and militant beat punch through the auditory canvas lashing truncated riffs and retro synthesised musings together.
Joculated in places, foreboding in others, Royal Blood's glimmered vocal notions and dramatic dance-rock arrangements sound familiar: AC/DC, Metronomy, Hot Chip, Justice, for example. Yet, the duo manage to put their unique stamp on this track with understated confidence and sincere belief which, ultimately, permeates the soundboard and leaves the listener wanting more.
