SUPER JUNIOR D&E - "NO LOVE" (K-POP, SOUTH KOREA)

K-Pop is experiencing a revolution in the European/US market as bands like BTS and BLACKPINK collaborate in well orchestrated commercial tie-ups with overseas artists. Super Junior are part of the "old guard" of bands who paved the way for contemporary emerging acts today. Having been around for over a decade, many members have split off to start side projects and D&E is one such example. Donghae and Eunhyuk have released their fourth mini album "Bad Liar" via SM Entertainment and the track "No Love" is a beast.

"No Love" is fundamentally built upon an abrasive, pulsating beat that is relentless in its entirety from start to end as metallic reverberations and cantankerous bass lines generate a K-Pop track that is heavily layered and fervently tempoed compared to the usual candyfloss arrangements associated with the genre. The unabashed, repetitive mantra piques interest whilst contumacious, breathy lyrics muddy the instrumental background in a typical Korean fashion to grip the listener further into this dance club anthem. This release is a nice side-step away from K-Pop normatives and certainly deserves recognition for that.
