JAMES HYPE FT HARLEE - "AFRAID" (DANCE, UK)

James Hype is the Liverpool born, London based DJ behind the hit smash "More Than Friends" as well as being famed for remixing tracks for the likes of Mabel, Clean Bandit and collaborating with R'n'B behemoth Craig David. Teaming up with HARLEE whose guest vocals on Joel Correy's "Lonely" and writer Rob Harvey who is credited with the same aforementioned song demonstrates the supreme domestic talent the UK currently has in the dance/house music arena and the nous behind Hype's utilisation of said artists. His latest offering is another dancefloor banger that gets you in all the right places.

"Afraid", as a single, takes a sidestep from the usual house/pop zeitgeist of recent years whilst still keeping the successful blueprint and genetics intact. Instead, Hype has ingeniously blended brassy orchestrations best associated with anthemic trance beats with circa early noughties Balearic tendencies. The whole composition invokes those bygone days in a short, sharp and frenetic excursion as HARLEE's pristine delivery lathers the soundboard with verve and pointed emotion as each lyric pangs with self doubt. This is not a typical dance number, there is a multifaceted complexity within "Afraid" as Hype's musical inputs vie for attention with the strength of HARLEE's vocals giving this club stomper an added element that many in the genre often miss. Either way, get us back to Ibiza and quick.
