THE AVALANCHES - "MUSIC MAKES ME HIGH" (DISCO-HOUSE, AUSTRALIA)
Back in 2001 via XL Recordings in the UK, The Avalanches dropped the quirky and charismatic "Frontier Psychiatrist", a track so far discombobulated beyond compositional norms that it was actually a work of genius which featured on their debut album "Since I Left You". Since then the Australian duo of Robbie Chatter and Tony De Blasi have sampled, looped and composed a broad variety of sounds and tracks to reinvent the soundscape. Their latest ventures on third studio album "We Will Always Love You" reveal another dynamic facet of the band, most notably in the form of disco tinged "Music Makes Me High".
Within seconds, this new jaunt effortlessly conjures up bygone images of shimmering glitter balls, roller skates and flared jeans as those founding slices of house beats and trumpeting brass interjections confidently pave a sound synonymous with seventies disco. By utilising a variety of samples the production in its entirety feels well balanced with a smooth tempo and fluid movement. Silken vocals warble between background crowd conversations to percolate through the music, delivering an immersive and engaging experience. Nothing is too extroverted about "Music Makes Me High" and as Chatter mentions "it was almost like a throwback to the music we grew up and were listening to". It is that thought process which has irefutably helped the two Australians to produce this understated yet decadent ensemble, exposing their true skills and celebrating the fun associated with the disco genre.
