UPSAHL - "MONEY ON MY MIND" (POP, USA)
Upsahl is a promising artist from Phoenix, Arizona whose musical pedigree dates back several generations having grandparents who were music teachers and a band touring father. The pugnacious soloist has already performed at Lollapalooza and released her debut EP "Hindsight 20/20" demonstrating her alt-pop leanings and songwriting wizardry. Her second single "Money On My Mind" is lifted from her second EP and harnesses her slick pop skills.
Immediately from the start Upsahl drips salacious instrumentals with tinkered metallic reverb bordering on the seductive, and that is before she has even dropped a lyric. Upsahl's brooding cooes nudge you along a lackadaisical path between juvenile innocence and adult agenda with jagged bass lines and a haunting soundboard lacquer. The true nature of "Money On My Mind" then begins to materialise; the American states that this "has nothing to do with actual money, it's a mindset. You can have all the money in the world and still be completely miserable, but to feel money as fuck, that's a whole other vibe". Neither shallow nor mediocre pop, this is something far more thought provoking as Upsahl coats her productions with succinct introspection and wonderment. With that understanding her latest masterpiece makes for stark reflection given the nature of this challenging year.
